#Liminal Spaces
What are the concerns that encompass the Indian artists: both young and old? Where do artistic thoughts intersect and diverge at the same time? How does an ever-expanding plane of culture formed by varying beliefs systems create pathways for a meeting of similar minds? These are only a few of the many questions that arise when one encounters Indian art. A place with people who firmly hold one foot in its long-rooted traditions and a head held up looking towards an optimistic future.
Gallery Sumukha brings together an array of works of artists of different generations, where each of them represent the changing phases of Contemporary Indian artistic practice. The works represents the minds of Indian artists and their preoccupations that is shaped by a transforming landscape comprised of identity, varied cultural practice, political ideologies, and the field of technology. They encompass a range of practices that are at times created using the humble medium such as ink and paper while at times resorting to using modern technology for producing art. The images are a representation of a collective consciousness – the sensibilities and sentiments that have shaped the Indian artist’s mind. From mythical narratives to being overlapped with a scientific mindset, the Indian visual culture is influenced by an amalgamation of tradition and change.
These works represent a bridge the artists have constructed between the various dichotomies that have a constant role to play in their day-to-day life. The regional and global, self and the other, new and old, myth and reality, nature and human, and most important of them all tradition and modernity. The visuals are reminders of a constant reconciliation the artists have to establish between them. Artists have become catalysts of this process and their works are a platform to represent the change.
