S.G. Vasudev

Born in Mysore in 1941, S. G. Vasudev graduated from the Govt. College of Arts, Chennai. Along with some of his colleagues and teachers, he later founded in 1966, the now famous “Cholamandal Artists’ Village” on the outskirts of Chennai. Vasudev has exhibited extensively internationally such as at the Paris Biennale; Biennale Cuba; Drawings International, Yugoslavia; New South ContemporaryPaintings & Sculptures, UK, to name a few. He has shown solo in USA, Canada, Germany and in all the major cities of India. He works with oils on canvas, murals, copper reliefs and tapestry.Vasudev’s works are in the collections of various public and private institutions such as National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Academi,Delhi; Air India; Wipro; Deutsche Bank; Citi Bank among others. . Working primarily with oils on canvas, he also works with ink on paper, water colours and with copper. He became known for his “vrisksha” (tree of life) series, which evolved over almost a decade, turning into the tree of life and death in the latter half of the 1980’s. He also explored the theme of ‘maithuna’ (act of love) through a series of drawings and copper relief works. Vasudev has been working closely with a master weaver to create tapestries in silk featuring the different themes he has been exploring over the years. S.G. Vasudev lives and works in Bangalore, India.
