M. Shanthamani

Born in Mysore, India, in 1967, Shanthamani obtained her B.A.in painting from CAVA, Mysore (1983-88) and M.A. (Fine)in painting from M.S. University, Baroda (1989-91). She has shown solo in Mumbai (Jehangir Art Gallery), 1994 and in Bangalore (Sakshi Art Gallery), 1996.Shanthamani has participatedin a number of group shows, many on relevant issues of the time.She works with interesting new mediums and materials, such as in “Immaterial Material” organized by Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore,1995. “Sahmat”, Artists Against Communalism, 1970; “Crosscurrents”, a three nations’ women artists’ touring show in Norway, 1997; “Edge of the Century”, exhibition of contemporary Indian art, New Delhi, 1999 are some of her group shows. Shanthamani has worked in art camps & Workshops such as InternationalArtists’ Camp at Habbarna, Srilanka,organized by the George Keyt Foundation (2001)and “Femme Actualle,Femme Eternelle”, organized by Alliance Francaise, Bangalore, Chennai, Pondicherry, Kerala,1997. Cultural trip to Turkey organized by Canvas, 2008; CampDhakshina Chitra, Chennai and Suvarna Karnataka Art Camp, Bangalore, 2006. Solo shows include Frozen Phoenix, installation, Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore, 2008; Silent Speak, paintings and body cast, Chemould Presscott, Mumbai, 2007;Gestures Speak, paintings Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore & Chennai,2007 and Fluid Fragments, painted installations at Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore, 2003. She has received the Arnawaz Vasudev Charities Scholarship (1996), All India Exhibition Chitrakala Parishath Award (1996) and the Inlacs Grant for one year, among others. Shanthamani lives and works in Bangalore, India.
